Dr Messinis research agenda has highlighted the role of education and human capital. He has published on education, job-skill mismatches, job training, the second-generation of immigrants in Australia, citations and patents, innovation and economic growth, educational achievements of tertiary students in Australia, and migrants in China.
Since 2005, he has managed the SEEK Employment Indicators project in a partnership with SEEK Pty Ltd. The indicators have been established as unique leading indicators of labour market trends by region. In 2008-09, Dr Messinis led a research team that identified four key segments in the VU student population. He is now Chief Investigator on a study funded by Curtain University of Technology, which uses data from Victoria University on domestic students entering higher education from 2005-2012 to examine the role of entry score and SES, among other factors, in shaping student performance in the first year of university.
