Dr Matthew Butlin was appointed Chairman of the Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission in 2008. He began his career as an economist with the Reserve Bank of Australia in 1975 followed by extended service in Canberra, including senior executive roles in the Departments of Prime Minister and Cabinet, and Employment, Education and Training. He later joined the Business Council of Australia as Research Director before taking senior executive roles with CRA Limited, Newcrest Mining and in management consulting. He returned to public policy in 2007 with the Productivity Commission.
Matthew has published in economics, management theory and practice, innovation, and economic history.
He has a bachelor of economics with first class honours from the Australian National University and a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Matthew is currently the national President of the Economic Society of Australia, and is a member of the Council of Leadership Victoria.
