Peter Dawkins became the third Vice-Chancellor and President of Victoria University in January 2011.
This followed six years in high level leadership roles for the Victorian Government, and twenty eight years in the university sector, of which almost a decade was as the Ronald Henderson Professor and Director of the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, at the University of Melbourne.
Peter was Deputy Secretary of the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance (2005-2006) and Secretary of the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (2006-2010)
His research, publications and advice to government both as an official and as the member of various policy advisory and review committees, and as a consultant, have covered such areas as labour markets, unemployment, taxation and welfare, education and health.
As the Vice-Chancellor and President of Victoria University, Peter led the development and now the implementation of the 2012-16 strategic plan in which Victoria University positions itself as: the University of Opportunity, helping students from diverse countries, cultures, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds, to find true success; the University of Industry and Community; and Australia’s Sport University.
In its research and engagement agenda Victoria University focusses on applied and translational research and making a difference to industry, community and public policy. Its partnership with the University of Melbourne in the Melbourne Economic Forum is part of this agenda.
