Professor Allan Fels is a Professorial Fellow at the Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research at the University of Melbourne and at the Melbourne Law School. He is also an adjunct professor at Monash University and visiting professor at Oxford University.
He was Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and its predecessor bodies the Trade Practices Commission and the Prices Surveillance Authority from 1989 to 2003. He has a conducted numerous enquiries for governments including the Victoria Taxi Industry Inquiry 2011-2013 and was an Associate Commissioner for the Productivity Commission inquiry into executive remuneration.
Professor Fels was the Dean of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government from 2003-2012. He currently conducts ANZSOG programs for high-level Chinese and Indian public service and political leaders.
Professor Fels is former Chair of the National Mental Health Commission and was a member of the Disability Investment Group, which was the original Australia government report calling for a national disability insurance scheme.
Professor Fels is Director, Competition Research Centre at the University of the Chinese Academy of Science (UCAS) in Beijing and Editor of the China Competition Bulletin. He is Chair of Visy Australasia Governance Board.
